What are the types of pain?

We all suffer from pain. The incidence of pain increases with age, and women are more likely to experience pain than men.

    1. Acute pain is an immediate response to trauma.
    2. Chronic pain lasts longer than the expected healing time. This usually takes more than three months. The pain can range from dull to severe, from mild to severe.

Studies have shown that a person’s emotional health affects their perception of pain. Understanding the cause and learning effective ways to treat pain can improve their quality of life.

Tips to cope with chronic pain

Listed are a few tips revealed by experts as an alternative guide to improving health:

    1. Physical technique

Hot and cold therapy is a common and safe way to relieve pain. The heat helps relax muscles and expand blood vessels. It can also help heal wounds. Applying ice lowers the blood supply to the area even to the nerve that sends pain signals to the brain, thereby reducing the swelling. Wrap some ice in a towel or glove and apply it to the pain area.

Massage increases blood flow to the muscles and relieves stress. People can benefit from this technique when used with other pain relief methods, such as physical therapy and pain relief agents. Physical therapy includes bodily techniques for stronger and flexible muscles and joints. It can relieve pain throughout the body; however, specific methods vary with body parts. Exercise therapy has long-term benefits for chronic pain, including helping people manage pain. It can include massage, exercise programs, and red light therapy.

    2. Relaxation technique

For many reasons, dealing with chronic pain can be stressful, including the inability to control a person’s illness; relaxation techniques can help relieve muscle tension, muscle spasms, and pain; they can also release endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. A person can relieve stress by relaxing, which can alleviate some chronic painful stress and improve sleep.

    3. Progressive muscle relaxation

This involves tightening and relaxing each muscle group from head to toe for 10 seconds.

    4. Deep breathing techniques

Slow and relaxed breathing techniques such as boxing exercises can help relieve tension. This is especially useful for the Covid-19 recovery period.

    5. Comfortable activities

Make time for relaxing activities, such as taking a hot bath, reading a book, or making handicrafts.

    6. Think calmly

Imagine a relaxing scene, such as a sunny day in nature, surrounded by trees and birds singing.

    7. Yoga

Yoga aims to relax, strengthen, and maintain the flexibility of the body by stretching in certain postures for specific parts of the body; it is a mind-body technique, and they have more control over how pain affects their daily lives. However, other studies have noted that yoga can effectively alleviate pain. It is a safe and cheap way to relieve pain. People can try yoga at home through online videos or attend a yoga class.

    8. Drug therapy

There are various painkillers available. Each class and type of medicine has a different effect; however, some medicines may be more suitable for some people than others.

    • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a group of drugs used to reduce inflammation and pain. They are provided in the form of capsules, tablets, creams, or skin gels. However, NSAIDs can cause stomach and cardiovascular diseases in some people, hence consult your physician before taking them.
    • Some antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, can relieve pain. Amitriptyline can also be prescribed in lower doses to treat chronic pain, such as diabetic neuropathy and fibromyalgia. It may take two to four weeks for a person to feel pain relief.
    • Opioids can treat moderate to severe pain and are usually only effective for a short period because they can be addictive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that a reliable source advise people to use opioids only when the benefits exceed the benefits because people often use opioids for chronic pain in a short period.

    9. Cognitive-behavioural therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that teaches people to recognize and change destructive or destructive thinking patterns that negatively affect behaviour and emotions.

CBT aims to change the automatic negative thoughts that cause and aggravate emotional distress, depression, and anxiety as these spontaneous negative thoughts are harmful to emotions.
